What IB Maths HL covers
IB Diploma Mathematics is offered as two courses, Analysis and Approaches (AA) and Applications and Interpretation (AI), each at Higher Level (HL) and Standard Level. Both cover five topics: number and algebra, functions, geometry and trigonometry, statistics and probability, and calculus. HL goes into more depth, with extra content such as proof and further calculus in AA, or modelling and advanced statistics in AI.
How IB Maths HL is assessed
- Paper 1 (30%): 2 hours. Non-calculator for AA, calculator allowed for AI.
- Paper 2 (30%): 2 hours, calculator allowed.
- Paper 3 (20%, HL only): 1 hour, two extended problem-solving questions.
- Internal assessment (20%): the mathematical exploration, a written report on a topic you choose.
Where students lose marks
- Gaps in algebra. Weak algebra slows down calculus and every longer question.
- Not showing working. Method marks are lost when steps are skipped.
- Unfamiliar Paper 3 problems. Practice with this style of question builds confidence.
How TutorPOD teaches IB Maths HL
IB Maths is taught by Matteo Locatelli, who holds an MSc in Space Engineering from Politecnico di Milano and has more than three years of experience teaching IB, high school and university students. Lessons adapt to each student, building deep understanding of hard topics, IA preparation and exam confidence.
Lessons run online and 1-to-1 on Google Meet, with a shared virtual whiteboard.
