How IB Business Management is assessed
IB Diploma Business Management is studied at Higher Level (HL) or Standard Level (SL). The course has five units: introduction to business management, human resource management, finance and accounts, marketing, and operations management. HL students study extra content and sit an additional paper.
- Paper 1 (case study based on a pre-released statement): 25% at HL, 35% at SL.
- Paper 2 (structured questions with a quantitative focus): 30% at HL, 35% at SL.
- Paper 3 (social enterprise case study, HL only): 25%.
- Internal assessment (Business Research Project): 20% at HL, 30% at SL.
Choose your level for details of each paper: IB Business Management HL or IB Business Management SL.
The Business Research Project
The internal assessment is a Business Research Project of up to 1,800 words on a real business issue. You use supporting documents, apply business management tools and analyse the issue through one of the course's key concepts.
Where students lose marks
- Generic answers. Paper 1 and Paper 3 reward answers that use the case organisation's own details.
- Calculation slips. Ratios, cash flow forecasts and investment appraisal need accurate, clearly set-out workings.
- Tools without purpose. Using a SWOT or Ansoff matrix is only worth marks when it leads to a judgement.
