How IB Economics is assessed
IB Diploma Economics is studied at Higher Level (HL) or Standard Level (SL). Both levels cover four units: introduction to economics, microeconomics, macroeconomics and the global economy. HL goes further, with extra content and more quantitative work.
- Paper 1 (extended response): 20% at HL, 30% at SL.
- Paper 2 (data response): 30% at HL, 40% at SL.
- Paper 3 (policy paper, HL only): 30%.
- Internal assessment (portfolio of three commentaries): 20% at HL, 30% at SL.
Choose your level for details of each paper: IB Economics HL or IB Economics SL.
The internal assessment
The IA is a portfolio of three commentaries, each based on a published news article. Each commentary applies economic theory and diagrams to its article, comes from a different unit of the course and uses a different one of the nine key concepts. Our IB Economics IA guide explains how to choose articles and structure each commentary.
Where students lose marks
- Diagrams that do not match the explanation. Every shift and label needs to support the point being made.
- Evaluation without examples. Top-band answers use specific, recent real-world examples.
- Slow calculations. HL students who are not fluent with the numbers run out of time on Paper 3.
How TutorPOD teaches IB Economics
Classes are led by Paul William, founder of TutorPOD. Lessons break each topic into manageable ideas, then practise them in the exact format of each paper, with comprehensive notes, revision packages before exams and personalised feedback on timed papers. IA mentoring covers choosing articles and drafting commentaries within the IB's rules. Classes run live online on Zoom, Google Meet or PodCall, or in person at our Tampines and Waterloo centres, in small groups or 1-to-1.
