What IB Business Management SL covers
IB Diploma Business Management is organised into five units: introduction to business management, human resource management, finance and accounts, marketing, and operations management. Standard Level (SL) students study the core content of every unit.
A business management toolkit runs through the course, with tools such as SWOT and STEEPLE analysis, Ansoff matrix, decision trees and break-even analysis. Four concepts, change, creativity, ethics and sustainability, link the units together.
How IB Business Management SL is assessed
- Paper 1 (35%): an unseen case study based on a pre-released statement issued before the exam session.
- Paper 2 (35%): structured questions based on unseen stimulus with a quantitative focus, such as finance and break-even.
- Internal assessment (30%): the Business Research Project, up to 1,800 words on a real business issue.
Where students lose marks
- Theory without the case. Every answer must use the organisation in the case study.
- Calculation slips. Paper 2 rewards accurate, clearly labelled workings.
- Tools used for show. A toolkit diagram earns marks only when it supports a decision.
- Weak IA research question. A vague question makes the whole Business Research Project harder to analyse.
