What IB Economics SL covers
IB Diploma Economics is built around four units: introduction to economics, microeconomics, macroeconomics, and the global economy. Standard Level (SL) students study the core content of each unit and learn to explain it with diagrams, apply it to real-world examples and evaluate economic policies.
Nine key concepts run through the course: scarcity, choice, efficiency, equity, economic well-being, sustainability, change, interdependence and intervention. Using them well lifts both exam answers and IA commentaries.
How IB Economics SL is assessed
- Paper 1 (30%): an extended response paper. Each question has a part (a), where you explain a theory with a diagram, and a part (b), where you evaluate using real-world examples.
- Paper 2 (40%): a data response paper based on texts and data, with definitions, diagrams, calculations and a final evaluation question.
- Internal assessment (30%): a portfolio of three commentaries on published news articles, each from a different unit and using a different key concept.
Where students lose marks
- Inaccurate diagrams. Missing labels or shifts that do not match the explanation cost marks on both papers.
- Memorised essays. Examiners reward answers that respond to the exact question, not pre-learned paragraphs.
- Weak final question on Paper 2. The last question carries the most marks and needs evaluation that uses the text and your own knowledge.
- Rushed IA commentaries. With 30% of the grade, choosing poor articles or using the key concept loosely is an expensive mistake.
How TutorPOD teaches IB Economics SL
Classes are led by Paul William, founder of TutorPOD. Lessons break complex ideas into simpler, manageable steps, then practise them in the exact format of each paper.
