What IB Business Management HL covers
IB Diploma Business Management is organised into five units: introduction to business management, human resource management, finance and accounts, marketing, and operations management. Higher Level (HL) students study extra content in several units and sit an additional paper.
A business management toolkit runs through the course, with tools such as SWOT and STEEPLE analysis, Ansoff matrix, decision trees, force field analysis and break-even analysis. Four concepts, change, creativity, ethics and sustainability, link the units together.
How IB Business Management HL is assessed
- Paper 1 (25%): an unseen case study based on a pre-released statement issued before the exam session.
- Paper 2 (30%): structured questions based on unseen stimulus with a quantitative focus, such as finance, break-even and investment appraisal.
- Paper 3 (25%, HL only): a case study about a social enterprise, ending with a recommendation.
- Internal assessment (20%): the Business Research Project, up to 1,800 words.
Where students lose marks
- Theory without the case. Answers must use the organisation in the case. Textbook definitions alone stay in the lower bands.
- Calculation slips in Paper 2. Ratios, cash flow forecasts and investment appraisal need accurate, clearly set-out workings.
- Tools used for show. Applying SWOT or Ansoff without linking it to a decision adds little.
- Weak conclusions. Evaluation questions need a clear, justified judgement, not a summary.
