What IB Economics HL covers
IB Diploma Economics is built around four units: introduction to economics, microeconomics, macroeconomics, and the global economy. Higher Level (HL) students study the same units as Standard Level in more depth, with extra HL content and more quantitative work, such as calculating elasticities, costs and revenues, multipliers and exchange-rate effects.
Nine key concepts run through the course: scarcity, choice, efficiency, equity, economic well-being, sustainability, change, interdependence and intervention. Examiners and IA moderators expect you to use them.
How IB Economics HL is assessed
- Paper 1 (20%): an extended response paper. Each question has a part (a), where you explain a theory with a diagram, and a part (b), where you evaluate using real-world examples.
- Paper 2 (30%): a data response paper based on texts and data, with definitions, diagrams, calculations and a final evaluation question.
- Paper 3 (30%, HL only): a policy paper. You work through data, calculate, explain and finally recommend a policy.
- Internal assessment (20%): a portfolio of three commentaries on published news articles.
Where students lose marks
- Inaccurate diagrams. Missing labels, wrong axes or shifts that do not match the explanation cost marks on almost every paper.
- No real-world examples. Paper 1 part (b) needs specific, up-to-date examples to reach the top band.
- One-sided evaluation. Strong answers weigh up both sides, consider the short and long run, and reach a justified conclusion.
- Paper 3 timing. Students who are slow on the calculations run out of time for the policy recommendation, which carries a large share of the marks.
How TutorPOD teaches IB Economics HL
Classes are led by Paul William, founder of TutorPOD. Lessons break each topic into small, manageable ideas, then practise them in the exact format of each paper. You get comprehensive notes, revision packages before exams, timed paper practice with personalised feedback, and IA mentoring for your commentaries.
One student, Jordan Neo from SOTA, scored a 7 in IB Economics HL after starting Year 5 struggling with the content. Classes run live online and in person in Singapore, in small groups or 1-to-1.
