What ACCA AAA covers
Advanced Audit and Assurance (AAA) is a Strategic Professional Options paper that puts you in the role of an audit manager. It covers regulation and professional ethics, practice management and quality control, planning and conducting audits of complex clients, including groups, completion and review, audit reporting, and other assurance and non-audit services.
The AAA exam format
AAA is a 3 hour 15 minute computer-based exam worth 100 marks, and every question is compulsory.
- Section A (50 marks): one long case study, usually focused on planning an audit or reviewing work at the completion stage.
- Section B (50 marks): two 25-mark questions on topics such as ethics, quality management, completion and reporting.
Professional skills marks are built into the questions and reward communication, analysis and evaluation, scepticism and commercial acumen. The pass mark is 50%.
Where students lose marks
- Missing the accounting issue. Many AAA risks start with a reporting error. Without the right accounting, the audit point falls apart.
- Lists instead of judgement. AAA rewards explaining why something matters and how significant it is, not long generic lists.
- No materiality. Calculating and discussing materiality is an easy, often-forgotten mark.
- Weak ethics answers. Each ethical threat needs to be named, explained and matched with a sensible safeguard.
Changes from September 2027
ACCA is moving to a new qualification structure. June 2027 is the final sitting of the current Strategic Professional exams, including AAA, and the first Expertise and Strategic Professional exams are sat in September 2027. If you plan to sit AAA in June 2027 or later, ask us how the change affects your route.
How TutorPOD teaches AAA
Classes are led by Paul William, founder of TutorPOD, who holds ACCA, CIMA and CA Singapore qualifications. AAA lessons are built around realistic audit scenarios, so you practise spotting the issue, judging its significance and writing it up the way the examiner expects. You get structured notes, live practice in class and timed mocks with personalised feedback.
Classes run live online and in person in Singapore, in small groups or 1-to-1.
Before and after AAA
AAA builds on Audit and Assurance (AA) and uses a lot of Strategic Business Reporting (SBR) knowledge. It is one of four Options papers, and you choose two.
