What ACCA AFM covers
Advanced Financial Management (AFM) is a Strategic Professional Options paper for students who want to work in corporate finance, treasury or financial advisory. It takes the techniques from Financial Management (FM) and applies them to bigger, more complex decisions: multinational investment, acquisitions and mergers, corporate reconstruction, the role of the treasury function, and managing currency and interest rate risk.
The AFM exam format
AFM is a 3 hour 15 minute computer-based exam worth 100 marks, and every question is compulsory.
- Section A (50 marks): one long scenario question, often a report to a board or client.
- Section B (50 marks): two 25-mark questions.
Professional skills marks are built into the questions and reward communication, analysis and evaluation, scepticism and commercial acumen. The pass mark is 50%.
Where students lose marks
- Calculations with no advice. AFM wants a recommendation the client can act on. Numbers alone do not pass.
- Weak assumptions. Good answers state the assumptions behind a valuation and question whether they are realistic.
- Hedging confusion. Forwards, futures, options and swaps need to be set out step by step, and compared at the end.
- Poor report format. Section A answers that are not set out as a report lose professional skills marks.
Changes from September 2027
ACCA is moving to a new qualification structure. June 2027 is the final sitting of the current Strategic Professional exams, including AFM, and the first Expertise and Strategic Professional exams are sat in September 2027. If you plan to sit AFM in June 2027 or later, ask us how the change affects your route.
How TutorPOD teaches AFM
Classes are led by Paul William, founder of TutorPOD, who holds ACCA, CIMA and CA Singapore qualifications. AFM lessons focus on case-based learning: you work through realistic scenarios, practise the calculations, then turn them into clear advice. You get structured notes, live problem solving in class and timed mocks with personalised feedback.
Classes run live online and in person in Singapore, in small groups or 1-to-1.
Before and after AFM
AFM builds on Financial Management (FM). It is one of four Options papers, and you choose two. It sits alongside the compulsory Strategic Business Reporting (SBR) and Strategic Business Leader (SBL).
