What ACCA SBR covers
Strategic Business Reporting (SBR) is the Strategic Professional paper that tests whether you can apply IFRS Accounting Standards the way a senior accountant does: in messy, real-world scenarios where the answer has to be explained, not just calculated. It builds directly on ACCA Financial Reporting (FR), and adds complex group structures, financial instruments, leases, revenue, employee benefits, the Conceptual Framework, the reporting of non-financial information and the ethical duties of a professional accountant.
The SBR exam format
SBR is a 3 hour 15 minute computer-based exam worth 100 marks, and every question is compulsory.
- Section A (50 marks): two scenario questions. The first (30 marks) is normally built around a group, asking you to prepare or correct consolidated figures and explain the accounting. The second (20 marks) usually combines reporting issues with an ethical dilemma.
- Section B (50 marks): two 25-mark questions covering specific standards, a discussion of current issues, or an analysis of financial statements from an investor's point of view.
The pass mark is 50%. A large share of the marks goes to explanation: why a treatment is correct, which standard applies, and what the effect is on the financial statements.
Where students lose marks
- Writing the rules instead of applying them. Copying out what IFRS 16 says earns little. Applying it to the lease in the scenario earns the marks.
- Weak group accounting. Consolidation, changes in group structure and foreign subsidiaries appear again and again. Shaky FR group skills show up quickly.
- Thin ethics answers. Ethical issues need the specific threat, the principle at risk and a clear action, not a general comment about integrity.
- Running out of time. With so much writing, students who do not plan each answer often leave a whole requirement unanswered.
Changes from September 2027
ACCA is moving to a new qualification structure. June 2027 is the final sitting of the current Strategic Professional exams, including SBR, and the first Expertise and Strategic Professional exams are sat in September 2027. If you plan to sit SBR in June 2027 or later, ask us how the change affects your route.
How TutorPOD teaches SBR
Classes are led by Paul William, founder of TutorPOD, who holds ACCA, CIMA and CA Singapore qualifications. Lessons are exam-focused: each standard is taught through a scenario, then practised with exam-style requirements and marked against the way SBR examiners award marks. You get structured revision notes, live problem solving in class, and timed mocks with personalised feedback on both your numbers and your written explanations.
Classes run live online and in person in Singapore, in small groups or 1-to-1.
Before and after SBR
SBR is one of the two compulsory Strategic Professional papers, alongside Strategic Business Leader (SBL). Many students pair SBR with an Options paper such as Advanced Audit and Assurance (AAA), which uses much of the same reporting knowledge.
