What ACCA SBL covers
Strategic Business Leader (SBL) is the capstone exam of the ACCA qualification. Instead of testing one topic at a time, it gives you a single realistic business case and asks you to act as an adviser or senior manager: assess strategy, governance, risk, technology, finance and change, and recommend what the organisation should do.
The syllabus covers leadership and ethics, governance, strategy, risk, technology and data analytics, organisational control and audit, finance in planning and decision making, and innovation and change management.
The SBL exam format
SBL is one integrated case study worth 100 marks, and every task is compulsory. The exam lasts 3 hours 15 minutes, including reading, planning and reflection time, and ACCA releases pre-seen material about the case organisation before the exam.
- 80 technical marks for the content of your answers.
- 20 professional skills marks for communication, commercial acumen, analysis, scepticism and evaluation.
Each task asks for a specific format, such as a report, briefing paper, memo or presentation slides, and states which professional skill it is testing. The pass mark is 50%.
Where students lose marks
- Generic answers. Theory that is not tied to the case scores poorly. Every point needs to use the company's own facts.
- Ignoring the format. A report written as a list of bullet points loses professional skills marks.
- No recommendation. Many tasks end with "recommend". Leaving it out throws away evaluation marks.
- Poor time management. Students who over-write early tasks run out of time on the last one, which is often where easy marks sit.
Changes from September 2027
ACCA is moving to a new qualification structure. June 2027 is the final sitting of the current Strategic Professional exams, including SBL, and the first Expertise and Strategic Professional exams are sat in September 2027. If you plan to sit SBL in June 2027 or later, ask us how the change affects your route.
How TutorPOD teaches SBL
Classes are led by Paul William, founder of TutorPOD, who holds ACCA, CIMA and CA Singapore qualifications. SBL lessons focus on case-based learning: reading a case efficiently, planning answers to the requirement, and writing in the format the examiner asks for. You practise full case studies under timed conditions and get personalised feedback on technical content and professional skills.
Classes run live online and in person in Singapore, in small groups or 1-to-1.
Before and after SBL
SBL is one of the two compulsory Strategic Professional papers, alongside Strategic Business Reporting (SBR). Most students take SBL last, once their Options papers, such as Advanced Financial Management (AFM), are complete or under way.
