ACCA FR · Topic guide
The ratios ACCA FR uses to interpret financial statements, and how to turn them into the written analysis that earns most of the Section C marks.
Section C of the FR exam normally includes an interpretation question. You are given financial statements and some background, and asked to analyse performance and position. Ratios are the starting point, not the answer.
Profitability
Liquidity
Efficiency
Gearing
For each important movement:
Use the information in the question, such as a new contract, an acquisition, a revaluation or a change in credit terms. Generic comments without the scenario score poorly.
Interpretation skills are used again in ACCA SBR, where you analyse financial statements from an investor's point of view.
FAQ
Profitability ratios (gross and operating margin, return on capital employed), liquidity ratios (current and quick ratio), efficiency ratios (inventory, receivables and payables days, asset turnover) and gearing and interest cover.
Usually only a small part of an interpretation question. Most marks go to explaining what changed, why it changed and what it means for the business.
Ratios depend on accounting policies, can be distorted by one-off events or year-end timing, use historical figures, and need a comparison such as the prior year or an industry average to mean anything.
