What CIMA P1 covers
Management Accounting (P1) is the Operational level Performance paper. It covers cost accounting for decision making and control, including absorption, marginal and activity-based costing, managing and controlling the budgeting process, standard costing and variance analysis, short-term commercial decisions such as relevant costing, break-even and limiting factors, and dealing with risk and uncertainty in the short term.
The P1 exam format
P1 is a 90-minute computer-based objective test, booked on demand at a test centre or taken online. Questions include multiple choice, number entry and other short-answer formats. Results are on a scale up to 150, and you need 100 to pass.
Where students lose marks
- Variance errors. Mixing up standard and actual figures, or the direction of a variance, is the most common slip.
- Relevant costing. Including sunk or committed costs gives the wrong decision.
- Time pressure. Calculation questions take longer, so practise moving on and coming back.
The 2026 syllabus update
CIMA updated its syllabus in 2026. Objective tests follow the new content from January 2026, with more on digital finance and data. The exam format did not change.
How TutorPOD teaches P1
Classes are led by Paul William, founder of TutorPOD, who holds CIMA, ACCA and CA Singapore qualifications. P1 lessons work through each technique step by step with real-time problem solving in class, then practise objective test questions under time pressure. You get structured notes and timed mocks with personalised feedback.
Classes run live online and in person in Singapore, in small groups or 1-to-1.
Operational level papers
P1 sits alongside E1 Managing Finance in a Digital World and F1 Financial Reporting. It leads to P2 Advanced Management Accounting.
