ACCA vs CIMA vs Singapore CA: Which Accounting Qualification Suits You?
A plain comparison of ACCA, CIMA and the Singapore CA Qualification for students and working adults in Singapore, covering exams, focus, flexibility and career fit.
Paul WilliamProfessional ACCA, CIMA & IB Business Lecturer in SingaporeChoosing between ACCA, CIMA and the Singapore CA Qualification is one of the first big decisions in an accounting career. All three are respected in Singapore, but they suit different people. This guide compares them on what matters most: what you study, how you are examined, how flexible they are and where they lead.
The short answer
- ACCA suits you if you want a broad, global qualification covering financial reporting, audit, tax and finance, and you may want to work in different countries or sectors.
- CIMA suits you if you are more interested in management accounting, business decision-making and finance roles inside companies than in audit or external reporting.
- The Singapore CA Qualification suits you if you plan to build your career in Singapore, particularly in audit or financial reporting, and you have, or are completing, a relevant degree.
ACCA at a glance
The ACCA Qualification has 13 exams over three levels: Applied Knowledge, Applied Skills and Strategic Professional. It also requires an Ethics and Professional Skills module and 36 months of relevant work experience. You can start without a degree, and many degrees give exemptions from the early papers.
In Singapore you sit local variants of the law and tax papers, so you learn Singapore law and tax. ACCA is changing its structure from 2027, with the final sitting of the current Applied Skills and Strategic Professional exams in June 2027. See our ACCA course page for how the change works.
CIMA at a glance
The CIMA CGMA Professional Qualification has three levels: Operational, Management and Strategic. At each level you sit three objective tests and a case study exam, 12 exams in total, plus practical experience for the CGMA designation.
Objective tests are on demand, so you can move at your own pace. Case studies are sat in four windows a year and test how you apply knowledge to a realistic business scenario. CIMA updated its syllabus in 2026 with more on digital finance. See our CIMA course page for details.
Singapore CA Qualification at a glance
The Singapore CA Qualification is run by ISCA, the Institute of Singapore Chartered Accountants. Its Professional Programme covers Financial Reporting, Assurance, Taxation, and Business Value, Governance and Risk, followed by a capstone module, Integrative Business Solutions, together with relevant work experience. Entry is based on your degree, and graduates without an accountancy degree may need to complete a foundation route first.
Because it is built for Singapore, it is closely tied to local standards, tax and practice. See our Singapore CA tuition page.
How they compare
- Focus: ACCA is the broadest. CIMA concentrates on management accounting and strategy. The Singapore CA Qualification focuses on the technical skills of a chartered accountant in Singapore.
- Entry: ACCA and CIMA both accept students without a degree at their first levels. The Singapore CA Qualification is mainly for graduates.
- Exam style: ACCA mixes on-demand exams with fixed sessions and long written exams at the top. CIMA combines on-demand objective tests with case studies. The Singapore CA Qualification uses module exams.
- Mobility: ACCA and CIMA are global brands, useful if you may move abroad. The Singapore CA Qualification is strongest for a career in Singapore.

- Will I stay in Singapore, or might I work overseas?
- Do I already have an accountancy degree, and which exemptions does it give?
