From ACCA FR to SBR: Bridging the Gap
What changes between ACCA Financial Reporting and Strategic Business Reporting, which FR topics you must still know, and how to prepare for the step up.
Paul WilliamProfessional ACCA, CIMA & IB Business Lecturer in SingaporeFinancial Reporting (FR) and Strategic Business Reporting (SBR) cover many of the same standards, so it is tempting to think SBR is just "more FR". It is not. SBR assumes everything in FR and then asks you to use it in a very different way. This guide explains the gap and how to close it.
What stays the same
SBR treats FR as assumed knowledge. You are expected to know, without notes, how to:
- prepare consolidated financial statements, including goodwill and non-controlling interest
- account for associates
- apply core standards such as IFRS 15, IFRS 16, IAS 16, IAS 36 and IAS 37
- calculate and interpret key ratios
If any of these are shaky, fix them first. Our FR guides on consolidated statements, cash flows and ratio analysis are a good refresher.
What changes
- From calculating to explaining. FR rewards correct numbers. SBR gives most of its marks to explaining the accounting: which standard applies, why, and the effect on the financial statements.
- Harder groups. SBR adds changes in group structure, such as step acquisitions and disposals, foreign subsidiaries and group cash flows. See our SBR group accounting guide.
- More standards. SBR brings in standards such as IFRS 9, IAS 19 and IFRS 2, and tests them in more depth.
- Ethics. SBR includes ethical dilemmas in a reporting context, often in Question 2.
- Current issues and analysis. Section B can ask you to discuss developments in reporting or analyse financial statements from an investor's point of view.
- Longer exam. SBR is 3 hours 15 minutes, with every question compulsory and most answers written.
How to prepare
- Refresh FR groups and core standards before you start SBR.
- Learn each new standard with a scenario. Do not just memorise rules; apply each one to a short case straight away.
- Practise writing. Use a simple structure for every requirement: the principle, its application to the facts, and the conclusion.
- Sit timed questions early. Writing speed is a skill, and SBR punishes students who meet the time pressure for the first time in a mock.
Timing your SBR attempt
Many students sit SBR soon after finishing Applied Skills, while FR is still fresh. If you plan to sit it in June 2027 or later, remember that June 2027 is the final sitting of the current Strategic Professional exams before ACCA's new structure starts in September 2027.
